Description: The Creeps!, created by Super Squawk Software, has to be one of the best and original tower defense games in the App Store. The story behind this game is one we were all familiar with as a child, dealing with the frightful monsters in the closet. The objective of the game is to protect the scared little boy from allowing the creeps to enter the bed by using glue bottles, toy blasters, boomerangs, and flashlights. Just like with other tower defense games, each weapon has different strengths and weaknesses attributed to it so strategy is key in where you want to place your items. The enemies have unique characteristics as well with some being faster but weaker while others slower but much stronger then normal. You are also given temporary help from giant spiders to slow down the creeps or UFO’s to sap their energy. This will help you immensely when facing the bosses who can be very tough to take down. The beautiful hand drawn artwork and creative and amusing sound effects really make this tower defense game stand out from the crowd as being top notch. Also, with there being 180 free levels to complete with three different game modes and levels of difficulty with tons of achievements to earn, there is certainly a high replay value. Description: When you hear about a game that involves flying melons, lethal blades, exploding bombs, and fruit hating ninjas, you’re talking Fruit Ninja. Created by Halfbrick Studios, the same developers of the ever popular Jetpack Joyride, this action game is quite simple and will be sure to result in instant fun for all. The object of the game is to use your finger to slash and splatter all the juicy fruit that comes flying onto the screen. The concept sounds pretty easy, however, if you miss three fruit or accidentally set off a bomb by swiping it, the game is over. Along with the classic mode, Fruit Ninja also includes arcade mode which provides for power-ups, zen mode which involves none of those annoying bombs, and multiplayer that allows you to play against an online opponent. There is some customization available in the Sensei’s Swag section where you can change the playing background or unlock the type of blade you want to use. Can’t get enough fruit slashing action? Description: Who would have thought that a jousting game could work so well on a mobile touch screen device. Shake Spears!, created by Alawar Entertainment, is a medieval jousting game that allows you to compete in tournaments to win over the heart of that special lady and be known as victorious throughout the land. There are three different game modes from which to choose. In Path to Glory, your knight will have to compete in twenty cities and must defeat four tough bosses to be awarded the championship. Act of Valour is all about survival. You will have to face knight after knight without reviving your health. Men at Arms is the multiplayer mode in which you can go up against a friend via Bluetooth. The controls of the game are relatively simple and easy to use, as your left index finger controls your knight’s shield while your right index finger controls the spear. The first knight that runs out of health and falls off his horse loses the match. As you compete against other knights, you will be awarded coins that can be redeemed for leveling up to improve your knight’s skills, or in the magic shop to purchase power-ups. There are sixteen power-ups in total that can be used in battle to give your knight the advantage, but watch out because your opponents can use them as well. Overall, Shake Spears! is a fun addictive game worth checking out and recommending to your friends that want to grow up to be a knight someday.

Description: I first heard about this game when I noticed a thread on Reddit posted by the developer promoting his app as currently being one of the Top 25 free apps in the App Store. (BTW, you can subscribe to This App is Awesome on Reddit here). Investigating further, the comments posted in the thread were almost all positive so I had no excuse not to give this game a try. Geared, created by Bryan Mitchell, is a puzzle game where the objective is to connect the rotating yellow and idle blue gears together using the gears that you have in your inventory. The controls are simple, just dragging gears in place, however the gameplay becomes more difficult as you advance through the 200 levels. There are in-app purchases that are available, however they are not necessary to complete the game. Thankfully, you are awarded tokens for leveling up and playing the game daily that can then be used to purchase solutions or skip a level if you get really stuck. Overall, Geared is a fun addictive game that is an absolute must get for any device and amazing for a free game to download.

Description: Spring has arrived here in the United States, and with Major League Baseball’s opening day behind us, the baseball season is back into full swing. Flick Home Run, created by Infinity Pocket, has really hit one out of the park as far as offering an addictive game that everyone can enjoy. The game is quite simple as you use your finger as a baseball bat to hit oncoming balls. How far you hit the ball all depends on targeting the correct speed and accuracy of your swing or “flick” required. Get awarded points and earn achievements for hitting balloons, cars, and stars. There is a nice level up system where you can upgrade your contact, power, or batting eye every time you fill up your experience bar. The game gets interesting as there are numerous types of balls that have different movements associated with them and, if you’re not paying attention, it can mess up your timing. There are 10 different modes that can be played beginning with training where you can practice your flicking skills all the way to Giant and Cutter mode which can be very difficult. Flick Home Run! even includes multiplayer action where you can challenge your friends in a home run derby to see who is the best flicker. Overall, this game offers numerous modes and addictive gameplay that will keep you occupied all season long.
